Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system. The symptoms include inflammation, flaking of the skin and patches on the skin. This condition appears mostly in early adulthood and for most people affects only a few areas. These patches can be recurring in nature.

The symptoms vary on the type of psoriasis but the most common symptoms include :

  • Plaques often covered with scales. These can be itchy and sometimes crack and bleed.
  • Plaques of scales on the scalp
  • Discoloration and pitting of fingernails and toenails.

There is no cure for psoriasis but the treatment can reduce symptoms to a great extent. Some studies show that if inflammation of psoriasis is controlled, the risk of heart disease, stroke and other diseases associated with inflammation can go down.
